We are excited to announce that Sai Ganesh Veeravalli<\/strong><\/span> has joined the DEPRIMAP project as a doctoral student at Karlstad University, starting his journey in August 2024. Sai Ganesh brings a wealth of experience in geo-information science and urban planning, making him a valuable addition to our interdisciplinary research team.<\/p>\n

Sai Ganesh’s doctoral work will focus on the intersection of geomatics and risk & environmental studies, addressing key challenges related to deprived urban areas (DUAs) in the Global South. His research will be supervised by a distinguished team of experts, including Dr. Stefanos Georganos<\/strong> and Dr. Jan Haas<\/strong> from the Geomatics subject, as well as Dr. Lars Nyberg<\/strong> and Dr. Konstantinos Karagiorgos<\/strong> from Risk and Environmental Studies. The interdisciplinary nature of Sai Ganesh’s work mirrors his academic background and experience, which spans fields like urban resilience, environmental management, and disaster risk reduction.<\/p>\n

With a Master’s in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation from the Faculty ITC, University of Twente, Sai Ganesh has previously worked on projects involving GIS and remote sensing for sustainability and risk assessments. His master’s thesis<\/a> focuses on identifying factors that influence flood damage mitigation among micro and small businesses in Kampala, Uganda. It explores how businesses adopt mitigation strategies, particularly in response to frequent flood risks, using the Protection Motivation Theory as a framework to understand their behaviour. His research combines technical skills in spatial data analysis with a deep understanding of socio-economic and demographic factors, which will be instrumental in advancing the DEPRIMAP project’s goals.<\/p>\n

Before joining DEPRIMAP, Sai Ganesh worked as a Scientist at the National Centre for Coastal Research, where he orchestrated GIS and remote sensing projects aimed at shoreline management and environmental policy in India. His ability to integrate geospatial and socio-demographic data to enhance community resilience in urban environments is a perfect fit for DEPRIMAP’s interdisciplinary approach.<\/p>\n

In addition to his academic achievements, Sai Ganesh is passionate about videography, travel, and photography, often blending his technical expertise with creative outlets. His enthusiasm for exploring new ideas and technologies will undoubtedly bring fresh perspectives to the DEPRIMAP project.<\/p>\n
