From written exam to Teambased Learning

Abstract

Introduction: The course “Scientific methods in nursing” is a part of the undergraduate nursing program at Karlstad University. There is an ongoing development of the course which aims to promote student-active learning.
Aim: To develop the course scientific methods in nursing using Teambased learning (TBL)
Method: TBL is a didactic approach that focus on small group interaction and is central to enhance the students ability to apply course content. TBL aims not only to covering content, but also ensure that students can use course concepts to solve problems. There are four essential elements in TBL ie. Formed and managed groups, Accountability, Feedback and Assignment design (Michaelsen & Sweet, 2008). In the current course, TBL was used to combine active learning and examine learning outcomes. The stadges of the TBL was used ie. Individual readiness assurance test, Team readiness assurance-test, Instructor feedback and Application oriented activities in form of reviewing a scientific article.
Result: Evaluation before and after the TBL shows that students rated an increased knowledge in scientific methods and students confirmed that TBL was a good study method.
Conclusion: TBL is feasible to use in learning scientific methods and most likely in other topics in nursing education.
