We discussed ethical issues relating to open online learning in our group a lot. I feel that we tend to forget the dangers of sharing when we blindly ascribe to the values that sharing is good. We discussed the issue especially in regard of protecting our students from forced sharing of contents that might be harmful for them, for example sharing blogs or their assignments in general in any politically hot topics (climate change, minority rights, sexual orientation etc., immigration). For example, students (and faculty) might become targets of cyber bullying and also coercive governments often monitor their citizens abroad and threaten those students and their families who do not stay true to official state policies. For example, prestigious universities like Harvard have this year made sure that all assignments in international policy course are turned in anonymously so that no other students even in a close course environment can know who have written the text they need to read or comment upon in order to protect their students. I think educational institutions should have practices in place that would protect students as well as the faculty from the negative consequences of sharing.

Interesting how you, when deepening your knowledge about CoI, find that you already have adapted some of the activities mentioned in the article. But I’m not surprised, I believe that we often use methods that gives meaning in our teaching, not knowing that there is a concept around them.

Hola colega:) Thank you! I would love to read your reflections. Which group are you in, Diana? (sorry for being a “dinosaur” in this environment but it’s not that easy to find the right paths all the time). Indeed, we have fun in our Spanish sessions:)

It is very nice to know that this ONL course brought us all closer and made us more collaborating and open to sharing.. songs, articles, texts.

Thanks for sharing your group journey through his topic, I quite enjoyed it reading how your group evolved and learned from the discussions. I think we had a similar experience, we began with a rather unstructured brainstorming, which started to grow into a more sophisticated conversation and ended up becoming a check list for educators. We also learned (well, most of us) about a new digital tool that we are keen to use in our classes.
The exercise you did with your Spanish students sounds quite fun!

Great to hear how your experience in this course has changed your thoughts about OER from irrelevant to ” a necessary and natural part”. And also gives you an insight in how you find materials (or not) in a course. Looking forward to hear more about your ONL journey 🙂

Institutional support is crucial, as there are so many aspects of opening our content and courses that we cannot control alone. Someone else in my group pointed out that that support can also come from learning communities (https://kirstyjfreeman.blogspot.com/2020/10/blog-2-open-learning-sharing-and.html ), I thought it was an interesting approach as well.
