It is well established that the transition from secondary school mathematics to university mathematics is challenging for many students. To tackle this \u2018transition problem\u2019, we have introduced various digital learning spaces. Initially, we introduced flipped-classroom, a self-evaluation tool and computer-based interactive activities where students work collaboratively investigating and exploring mathematical relationships. Currently, we have initiated a design-based research project to examine how the combined use of computer-aided assessment (CAA) systems and dynamic mathematics software (DMS) environments \u2013 both already widely used on their own \u2013 can support the development and assessment of higher-order mathematical skills by automating provision of appropriate feedback to students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In autumn 2020, we conducted a pilot study involving 256 first year engineering students taking a first course in calculus.&nbsp; As part of the course assignment, the students were asked to perform two computer-based mandatory small group activities designed for a DMS environment (in this case GeoGebra) embedded in a CAA system (in this case M\u00f6bius).
