Karlstad University
The Trans Studies Research Platform at Karlstad University brings together different scholars whose research relates to or is deeply embedded in the field of Transgender Studies.
Transgender Studies participates in the ongoing project of analysing and undoing the western and eurocentric paradigm of the gender binary. Transgender Studies stands as an umbrella term including intersectional research on non-binary, trans, and intersex experiences but also cisgender lives from a trans-specific perspective.
Transgender Studies is anchored in grassroot activism and advocacy work. It is political by nature, and within the context of recent global shifts and the threat those pose to human and LGBTIQ+ rights, the field is more than relevant and crucial in understanding and combating the violent rhetorics concerning gender and sexuality.
Within this research platform, we regularly organise events, such as lectures (in Sweden called “higher seminars”), workshops and conferences. On an annual basis three trans scholars have the opportunity to become Trans Studies Research Residents and visit us at Karlstad University.

The logo of this platform refers to the style of writing trans* – the asterisk in trans* serves as a “wildcard” symbol to indicate a broad, open-ended umbrella for gender identities that fall outside of the cisgender binary. The tilde symbol ~ indicates the connection between the trans- and homophobia, racism, ableism, colonialism and the ecological exploitation of Earth.
