What does it mean to be ‘smart’ in our society today and in the future? How can creative and innovative solutions contribute to sustainable development in rural areas? hese are questions that the research project Smart Villages are trying to answer. Researchers from Karlstad University are working with local entrepreneurs in retail and services along with experts in ICT and planning. The project aims to develop knowledge which will contribute to sustainable community development. It will also investigate how technology can be used to find new solutions to fulfil the needs of visitors, residents, and business in rural areas. How and What?

The project Smart Villages uses a research and development process containing three steps, each part leading on to the next. Step 1 consists of inventories and interviews; Step 2 focuses on creative workshops and during Step 3 the solutions from the previous steps will be tested and evaluated.

Why?

We want to create knowledge that contributes to sustainable community development. How do we form attractive and creative environments in rural areas for the benefit of businesses, residents, and visitors? What are the smart solutions that can help us deal with the challenges of today and tomorrow?

Who?

The project focuses on cases in two rural areas (Sysslebäck and Sillerud) in the county of Värmland, Sweden. The project team are: two local businesses, ATEA, SBK Värmland, and researchers from Geomedia and the Service Research Center at Karlstad University.
