On the strategic partnership of Transit and their work on sustainable mobility

In this part we asked the partner organisations to answer a set of similar questions on how they cooperate and work on sustainable mobility. The aim is to try to connect theoretical knowledge with practical work. In this section it becomes visible that the partner organisation has its differences, but also share commonalities. The material should contribute to increase knowledge for public organizations with different conditions and experiences about how they can work with mobility issues for increased cycling. Preferably, how to make use of theoretical and evidence based research.

The questions the partner organisation where asked to structure their intervention on was:

  • 1a. What measures does your municipality want to prioritize in the short term for increased cycling?
  • 1b. Which measures do you want to prioritize in the long term?
  • 2. How do we work with Campaigns, communication and the learning process?
  • 3. How do you work in your organization today for increased cycling and/or with other companies and organizations in your municipality?

Please reflect in relation to your context:

If you will answer those questions, what will be your answer?

Experiences from Karlstad Municipality

Building alliances with business and work places are important in the short term perspective. Include companies in your projects. Different strategy plans are important for Karlstad. However, they need to be revised and clear what goals we want to achieve. In a more long term perspective we need to work closer with the regional authorities. We also need to build the city more “inwards” than “outwards”. This means infrastructural investments that may change citizens mobility habits. Campaigns and communication have played an important part in our work, also to involve researchers and experts. A large organisation as Karlstad municipality with approximately 7000 employees needs measures and procedure to work together with workplaces around the city.

Additional, UPP develop closer ties to workplaces to stimulate the use of bikes among the employees. To serve as a role model, the municipalities has purchased electric cars and bicycles. On a longer term infrastructural investments, linking rural areas with the cities is promoted. UPP want to encourage the use of electric vehicles and support sustainable commuting within and among UPP municipalities. Communication and campaigns will be developed in three ways: Meeting between citizens and experts; towards specific target groups; using role-models that can inspire citizens. Thanks to the Transit project new ideas of how to promote sustainable mobility could be implemented as campaigns together with workplaces.

Experiences from Abegondo

The starting point for Abegondo differ to some extent from the other partner organisations. The security for bicyclists are poor. The distance within the municipality between houses and village center make it impossible today to use the bike. In short term Abegondo will take part in project that develops cycle paths for leisure and well-being. As a result from the best-practices presentation in Transit, Abegondo is developing a long term strategy in order to develop shared use cycling streets, using low-traffic roads for greater safety. Additional, develop a service point for electric bicycles. From the Transit project, Abegondo was inspired to design campaigns towards students in order to have effect on adults habits. Abegondo work with different stakeholders,
