ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper presentation is to present a research project exploring university teacher’s perceptions of practical teaching in higher education. The research questions regard for instance core concepts, aspects or qualities of practical teaching, and opportunities and/or barriers to practicing inclusive education in higher education. The methodology is a mixed methods approach using conceptual maps, photovoice and focus group interviews. Participants in the study were eight teachers at Karlstad university who took the course Knowledge, learning and practical teaching at the Centre for Teaching and Learning (UPE). The participants came from a range of countries both within and outside of Europe and had various previous experience in teaching in higher education. The material collected in the project consist of conceptual maps in the program Padlet on the first and last day of the course, as well as three photographs the participants had taken that represents their teaching. The photos and conceptual maps were discussed in focus group interviews that were audio and video recorded in zoom and transcribed. The presentation will present both preliminary results of university teachers’ perceptions of teaching and explore the use of the methodologies.
