Abstract

For each course, there are learning outcomes to be achieved at the completion of the course. Teaching and assessment are often considered mutually exclusive activities (lectures vs. examination). However, that border becomes less tangible during learning activities, where the assessment of comprehension is done subtly in the form of discussions. In all cases, communication is important for learning and feedback is vital for quality teaching and learning. Harnessing methods, tools, and approaches to
facilitate the communication is an ongoing process and technology plays a vital role in it.

During the digitalization fever, #COVID19, there have been instances where digital alternatives offered added values for communication and quality learning. From my experience with a large group of students, 90+ classroom, the use of technology (mentimeter) facilitated communication not only for conveying information, but also breaking down some accessibility barriers. During the lecture’s presentation, some questions were modified based on student’s responses, and highlighted the role of anonymity as an encouraging/facilitating aspect. Highlighted points of anonymous feedback are the opportunity to have an equal chance of participation, encourage/ empower students to voice their questions and opinions no matter how small and trivial, and encouraged some form of discussions/interactions with students.
