ABSTRACT

Videos are popular with many students, and pre-recorded material can save space for teacher-student interaction when re-used. During the Covid pandemic, online and analogous teaching resources became truly ”blended” for most of us. In a nutshell, videos are now firmly established as an aid to teaching and learning.

Few of us teachers in higher education are well prepared for this situation. During the course of my own university education, moving pictures were hardly ever discussed except as historical sources (I am a historian). No advice was given on how to use TV documentaries in class or make your own recordings, and definitely not on how to act in front of a camera.

In recent years, I have nevertheless appeared in a few TV broadcasts in the role of historical expert. In my presentation, I will share ”a rookie’s experience of taking part in TV documentaries”. I will highlight the differences between the professional documentary and the ”in-house academic recording”: the former enjoys all the advantages of a staff of expert film-makers and a proper budget, but the latter can, potentially, be of much higher scientific quality.
