Inform students carefully about what cheating is and the consequences of it. Do it in ways that are not too casual. Here are how you find more useful material on cheating and plagiarism.
One technique is to demand explicit declarations from the student that he knows the rules about cheating and has not cheated.
Plagiarism control can be set in Canvas. Then the student is forced to make such a declaration (by selecting a check box) in connection to the submission.
Another alternative is that the student are required to write a compulsory declaration in the exam itself. There is information about cheating and plagiarism on kau.se that you can share with your students.
